Maya Tlass - I am reading Remix: Conversations with Immigrant Teenagers. This book is about numerous teenagers who have immigrated to the U.S. and have had to adapt to the customs of America on their own. They have experienced discrimination and have focused their first years here on fitting in. One story that caught my attention was about a girl from Russia who, because she was a girl, was held back her parents. Once she came to America, she realized that she has the potential to become more independent. Throughout her experience, she figures out who she really is and what she wants to be while still staying true to where she came from.

Benali, Zoey: Black like me

Hey, I'm Zoeyヾ(>ω<○)~☆! I'm reading Black like me and John Howard Griffen, the author and main character, wants to darken his skin to see what its like to be a black man. So he contacts a few dermatologists and one of them agrees to do it. They were fine with it the first few sessions but then they start to slowly chickening out of it and wanting to leave. But the only one who was feeling nauseous was Griffen because of the pills and lamps. The stereotype that was lingering in the dermatologists' mind was that black people will just kill their best of a friend with no reasons at all. Griffen tries to tell him that that's obviously not true but the dermatologist still doesn't believe him even though John is technically not black in the first place so it doesn't even apply to him anyway.

I am Juliette Early and I am reading The Help

The Help scruntizes black steryotypes and social standars of African Americans. The steryotypes are that black people are dirty, lazy, and carry diease. Hilly, a rich white woman said

"A bill that requires every white home to have a separate bathroom for the colored help. I've even notified the surgeon general of Mississippi to see if he'll endorse the idea. I'll pass." W(1.32) White doctors helpped create the steryotype that black people cared diease. This steryotype helped create a law that legally allowed white people to discremnate against black people. It also reinforced racism and the steryotype. Also the steroytypes of black people were passed ongeneration after generatin. Aibileen said  "I want to yell so loud that Baby Girl can hear me that dirty ain't a color, disease ain't the negro side of town. I want to stop that moment from coming – and it come in every white child's life – when they start to think that colored folks are not as good as whites." (7.80) Many children are born with racial prejudices and sterotypes.

I am reading I Hunt Killers and throughout the whole book is one big stereotype. That stereotype is that because the main character, Jasper Dent, is automatically supposed to be a serial killer since his father, Billy Dent, was one. Even though Jasper has proven his whole life that he is nothing like his dad people still have the fear of him lashing out at any moment. I, on the other hand, believe that you can be whatever you want no matter what your "fate" is.

My name is Callum and I'm reading Columbine. In the time period of the Columbine shooting there were stereotypes of what a suburban school shooter was that they where white, male, and a teenager but they normally were the openly troubled ones unlike Dylan and Eric who tried to hide what was going on. There isn't much to predict because it is a widely publicized shooting and i know how it ends

Invisible Man

This book is set in the time period after the civil war, where a model black citizen is slowly having his life ruined by being at the wrong place at the wrong time. He was raised in the south, so naturally he has grown up surrounded by racism. Southern stereotypes plague the beginning of the book. Some examples included are constant violence, double, triple, and quadruple contractions, vulgar language, and the over pronunciation of specific letters in certain words.
