Ingredeints 

• 1 Cup Fine Ground Corn Meal
• 1 Cup Self Rising Flour
• 2 teaspoons Baking Powder
• 1 teaspoon Salt

• 2 Eggs
• 3/4 Cup Buttermilk (Milk with 2 tsp vinegar can be substituted)

• 1/3 Cup Water
• 1/4 Cup Butter, melted

• 1/2 Cup Palmetto Cheese - Original, Jalapeno, or Bacon    
• Oil for frying
• Recipe 

In a mixing bowl, combine all dry ingredients and mix together.In a separate bowl, combine all wet ingredients except for the Palmetto Cheese and Oil and mix those together.Add the wet ingredients to the dry and stir until combined.Mix in the Palmetto Cheese.Heat oil in a pan over medium heat.Add two tablespoons of the batter to the heated oil.When golden brown, flip over onto the other side and cook until golden brown. It's always good to test one take make sure they are completely cooked.

                   The war has gone to hell. After the Union forced nearly one-third of us to surrender at Vicksburg everyone just about gave up. Every soldier left knows Lee is just grasping at straws, trying to save face. Are you guys ok? I heard that damn Sherman has been running through Georgia destroying everything in his path. I've never seen a more dishonorable move in warfare than attacking innocent civilians. Let me know as soon as you get to safety.

I am reading the book columbine and it amazed me how wrong the media was. Any rumor or anything was reported in volume and most were remotely untrue. Media slip-ups kept spiraling and spiraling down seeming to get worse. Although the media slipped up the eventually got it right.

I think mr Griffins ettempt to change his skin color to find out about the other side of segregation will help open people’s eyes but will hurt Griffins reputation. I also feel like Mr Griffin should have changed his name especially since some one already noticed his name almost giving him away.

     The main character of Invisible Man feels that world that surrounds him is racily diverse but racist because anyone that isn't white is treated poorly mainly the African Americans and there isn't that much being done about the problem yet so people just suffer and let things happen that shouldn't be happening because if they were to try to do anything to stop the racism they would be severely punished.

     In the book Invisible Man the main character asks to deliver his speech but is forced to participate in a blindfolded battle royale against his fellow Negros. After this he is awarded the right to deliver his speech and ends up getting a scholarship to an all black college. During his first year he meets Mr. Norton, a founder of the school, and drives him around for a day. They decide to visit a man named Trueblood who tells a story. During the story Mr. Norton feels ill and the narrator rushes him to a bar to get a drink for him. 

I am Juliette and I read The Help. My favorite character in The Help is Skeeter because she seeks to write and speak out about racial prejudices black people face. She had a lot of courage because she was shun by the white community because of her activism. She also is hardworking. She pitches her book and ideas to many publishers but must deny her because she is a woman and they don’t believe in what she is writing about. Also she has a trust fund but she doesn’t embrace the predjuces that the upper white class has against black people. She chooses to break from the social norm takes many risks as a white woman in the south

In the book black like me , in the book recently the guy griffin gets treated like trash because there are things black people people can't do it is not fair to griifin even though he was white. They kept on staring at him with the evil eye with racism . He keeps looking for a job , but never finds one . All Along he needs to be respective . The way Invisible Man is slowly losing his optimism for people towards the end of the book is kind of disheartening. He has been let down so many times, and becomes cynical and suspicious of every person he comes across. Invisible Man feels undervalued and starts taking his frustration out on other people, which leads to his ultimate downfall in society.

Hi, I'm Zoey _(┐「ε:)_ ! I'm reading Black Like Me. During the Socratic, we noticed that it was hard for black people to find a job because people assumed that they were not educated and skilled enough to do anything and flat-out rejected them before they gave them a fair chance. Some black people did not even get jobs because they didn't get any opportunities to get educated in the first place. So it became a cycle of not able to get an education, not getting to collect all the skills that are valuable for later in life, and then not being able to provide enough money for their child's education.

        Hello this is Abby, The Help is a heart touching and very informational book. Mae Molly is the daughter of Miss. Leefolt. Miss. Leefolt does not pay a single second of her attention to Mae Mobly. Instead Aibileen, their maid, take care of her. Aibileen is basically her mother figure. I feel sorry when Mae Mobly gets in “trouble” by Miss. Leefolt and then her mama slaps her on the back of the legs, even thought she did nothing wrong. All Mae Mobly wants is for her mother to pay attention to her and spend time playing with her. When Aibileen was teaching Mae Mobly how to use the toilet, she taught her on the bathroom in the garage (the colored people bathroom). Aibileen couldn’t use the toliets inside the house. So when Miss. Leefotl saw Mae Mobly trying to use the colored people bathroom she got angry and blamed it on Aibileen. Abileen could not teach her anywhere else though  because she wasn’t allowed to use the inside bathroom. Miss. Leefolt is so mean to Mae Mobly and Aibileen. I think Miss. Leefolt should obviously pay more attention to Mae Mobly and try to be a better mother to her.

I am Sebastian Trejo . I am reading black like me. John howard griffin turns himself into black with chemicals by the doctor. He gets cheaked every week about what the chemicals did to him . After he turned black from white he shaved off all his hair , got out from his house and went on the bus to go to the deep south. He got of from the bus to the hotel. Later on he tries to find a job but is having a hard time finding one . He has been racial descrminizedwhen he try’s to sit on the bus where the white people sit. It is very bad because of all of what the south does.

At the end of Columbine, the author, Dave Cullen includes pages from the boys personal journals in the back. Eric had multiple pages of sick and twisted fantasies, including rape fantasies and a dream existence in which he wiped out mankind and lived in seclusion. He had a variety of these fantasies and made it a hobby of telling girls in online chat rooms about his fantasies. The problem was, his fantasies couldn't just stay in his head, after they had festered for years he most likely felt the need to act on them which ended in disaster.

I am Gabriella and I am reading Columbine
Columbine is a very eye opening book.
It talks about the events that lead up to the first major school shooting, at Columbine High School.
The book goes in thorough detail of some thoughts why Eric and Dylan committed the shooting.
There are also many pictures of the drawings in their journals.
The boys seemed so happy, it was surprising to me when i found out it was them who killed so many innocent people.

A long way gone

In my book," A Long Way Gone" the main character in my book is Ishmael who is a child who was caught in the war while just being a spectator. The enemy who is destroying the villages are rebels who force children to join their side. Because of this many adults are afraid of this they are cautious and make a stereotype from children thinking that they are rebels. Whenever Ishmael goes into a village 2 things usually happen. Most of the time the village is abandoned because they hear rumors of children coming to their village. Because of this stereotype, many people assume children to be rebels which leads to panic and people leaving the village. On the other hand, there can be a ton of soldiers ready to take the "rebels" to be questioned either to be released or to be killed.

i am reading Columbine, right now the police are explaining the community what is going on. Most of their information is just conspiracy so none of it is really true. Families are completely broken... This was the first major shooting, it caused lots of damages and because of Erik and Dylan lots of schools are being affected and there has been lots of attempts to attack a school. For example not so long ago there was a shooting in parkland, Florida, there were 17 deaths. People are doing nothing to prevent these tragedies, and more and more schools are getting damaged.
Dylan and Eric left journals explaining their plans, reasons, they had pipes that were supposed to be used for the bombs, they had been planning this for 2 years. Eric started his journal before Dylan (3 months)

In the novel I Hunt Killers the main point of the story is that Jasper Dent is trying to prove that he us not a serial killer like his father by helping out with the murder of Jane Doe. However, while trying to solve this case he starts convincing people and himself that he might actually turn out to be just like his father. Jasper's fathers voice in his head and killer instincts cause him to almost do horrible things, like strangle a women.   

Jake L- Huck Finn #2

Hi, this is Jake and I'm reading Huck Finn.  during the Socratic seminar, we were talking about discrimination and in my book, when Hucks dad found out that black people could vote, he kind of blew up and ranted on and on about how that was wrong and how he was never gonna vote. right before we were about to change the subject, Ashley asked for any examples of discrimination that weren't racial, which made me remember this one part where when Hucks dad finds out that huck is educated and can read, he also goes off and says that he hates huck because he thinks that he's better than his dad because he can read. I'm not exactly sure if that's discrimination but I think it can connect to it a little.

Hi, I am reading columbine the novel and it seems like the media is trying to confuse the people the reported all rumors and guesses in volume and hardly said it was speculation.This really pointed out a huge problem with america's media and how they are digging and digging a deeper hole of fear for the average american to live in. News usually reports on crime and bad things leading the watcher to believe there's a lot more of crime than there is in actuality there is not the amount the american people believe in.

Hi this is Callum and i'm reading columbine which was the first major shooting which inspired this mass call for gun control. Before Columbine there where a bunch of minor shootings (1 or 2 people every few months) but Columbine was the first double digit shooting. It also gave future shooters an outline on the best way to go about it. It has taken almost 19 years but now another high school was shot up but now the kids have inspired most of a country that we need to do something and finally something might change.

Lulu Sawaf The Help

In my novel the help Mae Moebly is Elizabeth Leefolt's daughter. Mae Moebly spends most of her time with the black maid Aibleen and Aibleen has preserved her innocence. Aibleen teaches her that black is not dirty and that Mae Moebly should have self confidence. When Aibleen gets fired she can only hope that Mae Moebly will still remember the lessons. Mae Moebly is the only innocent character in the book. She represents the future and hope to end racism. I think she may grow up to be a protester and advocate for equal rights. She is the embodiment of free thinking and she does not judge people on skin color or appearances.

Hi this is Ethan and I am reading The Astonishing Life of Octavian Nothing. My book has so many characters whites and blacks alike. One of my favorite character is a man named Mr. Trefusis who is Octavian’s Latin teacher. He is an amazing teacher who is very interactive when teaching Octavian. Even after he is forced to stop teaching Octavian Latin he still is teaching Octavian about the world around him. Does your book have any good mentors in your books. I can’t wait to see where this character goes.

Hi, this is XxX_pro_minecrafter420_XxX and I am reading The Adventures Of Tom Sawyer. If you couldn't guess from the title, it is about a kid named Tom Sawyer who goes on adventures. At one point in the book he gets tired of being "normal" so he and two other friends go to an island and pretend to be pirates.

Abby D-To Kill A Mockingbird

I read To Kill A Mockingbird, and my book is loaded with stereotypes. One stereotype in TKAM is the fact that Scout(one of the main characters) is a girl, yet she is nothing like one. She wears overalls, likes bugs, and rolls around in the mud and dirt with Jem(her brother) and Dill(her friend). When you think back to women in the 1900's(the time this book took place) you would thimk that a girl would wear dresses and drink tea with her mother's friends, but Scout did nothing of the sort. Harper Lee(the author) wanted to show that nobody is the same, and stereotypes should never be a label put on someone.

Huckleberry Finn #2

In the book Hucleberry Finn, the amount of stereotype and prejudice because of it is overwhelming. Towards ththe beginning of the book, after Huckleberry runs away, it is believed that he has been murdered. Once it is then revealed that Jim has run away, everyone immediately assumes that Jim is the one who murdered Huck. Instead of thinking that it is Pap, who has been known to Hurt Huck and  is also a drunk, their first assumption is Jim. Simply because Jim is a Black Slave, he instantly becomes a murderous monster in their eyes. Instead of using logic and reasoning, they instantly decide that Jim must pay for his actions, his actions that do not exist. The irony becomes even more evident once Jim repeatedly saves and helps Huck, further solidifying that he is a pure, honest human being

Maya Tlass - I am reading Remix. Stereotype is most evident in this book. Once the teenagers make it to America, a stereotype is put upon them that kind of degrades them and puts them in an uncomfortable place. The immigrants end up changing themselves to fit in with the rest of the Americans. All the while, the immigrants are secretly putting a negative stereotype on the American teenagers that changes the way they thought about America in general.

Ryan Stanicic - Huck Finn

Huck Finn is full of surprises. The southern dialect is strong and the story keeps going all over the place. At one point, Huck had to pretend to be a girl. I don't want to spoil the book but I would like to say that it is a crazy story full of twists and turns and unexpected results, a great read.

Leslie Quevedo-Black like me

I believe that in Black Like Me, it shows a great example of innocence being taken away, with John. He kind of had the idea of what black people went through in the South but he didn't knew the whole truth until he decided to change his skin like them and actually get to experience the same thing they did. Whenever John experienced this, it was like he was in another world, he never had imagined it being this bad and it really opened his eyes on how racist people were towards. Whenever he walked in the streets, people would call him names and whenever he tried to go look for a job, they all denied him because of his skin color. So, experiencing a black person's life really opened like a new world in him.

In  book Blake like me when mr Griffin shares his resurch to the world it was interesting to see other people’s reactions to it from many interviews with mister griffin to people threat his mother.
I feel like because of what happened to him while black and after he turned back to white he changed now knowing what’s behind the cruel wall of segregation and then being awarded and punished by his actions.

Collumbine is a very interesting book because it's non-fiction and because there is really no story to the book besides the story that happened in real life. The whole book of Columbine is just analytics about what happened but it makes the book a lot more interesting especially being able to hear exactly what everyone said and how people depicted it at the time. I really suggest that you read Columbine because it is definitely a different experience than most books.

Hi this is Caleb and I am reading Uncle Tom's Cabin. One recent character I have been conflicted about is Simon Legree. Simon Legree is the last owner of Tom and the one who ordered his death. When Tom didn't tell Legree where Cassy and Emmeline went, Legree told his overseers to kill Tom. As Tom was dying he forgave the people who killed him because Tom was a very religious and humble man. Because of that the men who killed Tom became more religious and regretted what they did.

I am Sarah and in my book, Columbine, the author composes numerous interviews with victims, police, and familys of deceased. Dave Cullen, the author, read many police reports and other documents about this event in order to write Columbine. He tells many different sides of the story and even goes into detail about the mind state of Eric and Dylan. An example of this is in chapter 17 when it talks about the 5,000 interviews the poilce did over a 6 month period.

An event that really changed my book TKAM (To Kill A Mockingbird) was the court case that happened when Tom Robinson was said to have raped someone. Immediately after the case (which was really interesting) you here talk as Scout says to Atticus that there's been talk about how the girl's father want's to kill him, and that affects the book a lot as the book goes on. It provokes one of my most favorite event in the entire book as it all goes down.

Hi! This is Julia, and I’m reading The Help. I feel like nobody is talking about Lou Anne at I’m very surprised. Sure she’s sorta a minor character, but I feel like people are praising Miss Skeeter and Miss Celia for treating their maids fairly, but what about Lou Anne?! She treated Louvinia like family, and when Robert was blinded, she helped get him to a colored hospital and waited with Louvinia in the ER waiting room for six hours! Lou Anne herself has her own problems with depression and everything, but she said Louvinia is one of the reasons she gets out of bed in the morning! Even when Miss Hilly told her that Louvinia had written a chapter in the book and that she needed to fire her, Lou Anne had promised she’d never fire Louvinia and that she would keep her employed for as long as she lived. I know this doesn’t follow the regular format for our blog posts, but I just felt like it needed to be said! These two don’t get enough credit for the part they play in the book!

Hi this is Chance and I am reading The Adventures of Huck Finn and this book has a lot of different stereotypes in it, and I mean a lot. One of the less obvious Stereotypes in this book was the king and the duke. They represent the stereotype of two rednecks pretending to be scholarly so they could con the naive townspeople and steal money from them. Another person that could fit a stereotype even better is pap, who represents the stereotypical drunk father who is always angry all the time no matter what and abuses his son. Overall, the book The Adventures of Huck Finn has stereotypes of all kinds in it. 

Bella Garcia-Uncle Tom' Cabin

There were many important scenes throughout the book that really brought out the book and its popularity. There are three specific scenes that I think are the main scenes that put the book together. The first scene is at the beginning of the book when Mr. Shelby and Mr. Haley are discussing the trade of Uncle Tom and Harry. After this Eliza escapes, which is a big turning point in the story. Before she escapes she warns Uncle Tom that he has been sold. The next morning when they discover she has escaped, the trader immediately goes out to look for her with two other slaves. They spot her and try to run after her, but she somehow manages to cross the Ohio River in an intense scene. Another important scene is when Uncle Tom rescues Eva from drowning. After that she tells Uncle Tom that her father will purchase him, which he does. That's really where the friendship between Eva and Uncle Tom begins, which completely changes Uncle Tom's path of slavery. The final important scene is when Mr. Legree demands answer to the whereabouts of Cassy and Emmeline after their escape. When Tom refuses to tell him,  Legree beats him so bad that Tom dies. Even though his death was inevitable, it still came as a shock to me because I thought he was going to die peacefully.

I am reading a novel called the help. It is a novel about the social and economic differences between colored and white people. There is an abundance of stereotypes surrounding one character; Hilly. All of the other characters seem stereotypical but actually have quite a lot of depth. Hilly is ignorant and believes only the worst about black people. She is petty, condescending, selfish, and has a large sense of false superiority. She is power hungry and fake. A stereotypical mean girl. Other than that, The Help has very dynamic characters. The Help is parallel to the rampant but less obvious racism that ravages America. I feel like Hilly is a very extreme but realistic embodiment of bigotry from the sixty's. A personification of the Jim Crow laws and racist America.

Ryan Stanicic - Huckleberry Finn

In the book Huckleberry Finn, Huck decides to stop being a street urchin and become civilized using the money he found at the end of the book “Tom Sawyer” , but out of pure instinct, gave all of the money to Judge Thatcher. The next day, his drunk, pathetic, deadbeat dad commanded Huck to give him the money, but when Huck said that he had given it all to Judge Thatcher, his dad kidnaps him and forces him to live in filthy poverty in a little shack by a river. Obviously, Huck is not ok with this, so he fakes his own death and hides out on an island where he meets a slave names Jim who was trying to escape the south and get to the north. He and Jim team up to get to the north via the Mississippi River, where a whole bunch of crazy and unexpected events occur.

Hi this is Lucia. I am reading Uncle Tom's Cabin, written by Harriet Beecher Stowe. The book is about  Uncle Tom being sold, and sent down South. It talks about his journey, and his new fate.Uncle Tom's Cabin   has quite a few  stereotypes. One of those stereotypes would be Haley, because he is an uneducated slave trader. That is what was thought of slave traders at that time. Another stereotype would be Rachel, because she is what you would think of a  Quaker. Even though there are some stereotypes, it breaks a lot of them. Like Mr. and Mrs. Shelby, you would think slave owners were harsh and cruel, but they were not. Mrs. Shelby regrets owning slaves, and says that it is unchristian.  I predict that there will be a dramatic twist, such as Eliza won't make it North. So far, my book has been really good, and I can't wait to read the rest.

Jake L. Huckleberry Finn


This book has a lot of stereotypes, like uneducated slaves & superstition. There's another stereotype about the drunk father. Hucks dad is always drinking and is very abusive to him. Its been a long time since Huck saw him last, and people thought that he was dead, but after getting his fortune read by Jim, he goes to his room and finds his dad in his room.I think that this is foreshadowing that Huck might finally get rid of this problem once and for all.

I am Gabriella and I am reading Columbine. In this book the news reporters are using many stereotypes for trying to figure out who the shooters are. They keep thinking the shooters are outcasts, some even thought they were terrorists because they were wearing black coats. It is ironic because none of those stereotypes are true in this situation.

I am Sarah and I am reading Columbine. In the book the author goes into detail about Dylan, one of the shooters, and disguses how he was not into violence and never wanted to hurt anyone. As a child Dylan always was a sweet boy who loved nature and would go on fishing trips with his dad. Dylan occasionally had out bursts but everyone thought he would grow out of it. He was a genius and was put into advanced classes all through school. As he grows up he gets attached to his bestfriend Eric and he copies everything Eric does. Because of Dylans lack of self confidence, he followed Eric into this horrible decision.

Maya Tlass - I am reading Remix: Conversations with Immigrant Teenagers. This book is about numerous teenagers who have immigrated to the U.S. and have had to adapt to the customs of America on their own. They have experienced discrimination and have focused their first years here on fitting in. One story that caught my attention was about a girl from Russia who, because she was a girl, was held back her parents. Once she came to America, she realized that she has the potential to become more independent. Throughout her experience, she figures out who she really is and what she wants to be while still staying true to where she came from.

Benali, Zoey: Black like me

Hey, I'm Zoeyヾ(>ω<○)~☆! I'm reading Black like me and John Howard Griffen, the author and main character, wants to darken his skin to see what its like to be a black man. So he contacts a few dermatologists and one of them agrees to do it. They were fine with it the first few sessions but then they start to slowly chickening out of it and wanting to leave. But the only one who was feeling nauseous was Griffen because of the pills and lamps. The stereotype that was lingering in the dermatologists' mind was that black people will just kill their best of a friend with no reasons at all. Griffen tries to tell him that that's obviously not true but the dermatologist still doesn't believe him even though John is technically not black in the first place so it doesn't even apply to him anyway.

The Help scruntizes black steryotypes and social standars of African Americans. The steryotypes are that black people are dirty, lazy, and carry diease. Hilly, a rich white woman said

"A bill that requires every white home to have a separate bathroom for the colored help. I've even notified the surgeon general of Mississippi to see if he'll endorse the idea. I'll pass." W(1.32) White doctors helpped create the steryotype that black people cared diease. This steryotype helped create a law that legally allowed white people to discremnate against black people. It also reinforced racism and the steryotype. Also the steroytypes of black people were passed ongeneration after generatin. Aibileen said  "I want to yell so loud that Baby Girl can hear me that dirty ain't a color, disease ain't the negro side of town. I want to stop that moment from coming – and it come in every white child's life – when they start to think that colored folks are not as good as whites." (7.80) Many children are born with racial prejudices and sterotypes.

I am reading I Hunt Killers and throughout the whole book is one big stereotype. That stereotype is that because the main character, Jasper Dent, is automatically supposed to be a serial killer since his father, Billy Dent, was one. Even though Jasper has proven his whole life that he is nothing like his dad people still have the fear of him lashing out at any moment. I, on the other hand, believe that you can be whatever you want no matter what your "fate" is.

This book is set in the time period after the civil war, where a model black citizen is slowly having his life ruined by being at the wrong place at the wrong time. He was raised in the south, so naturally he has grown up surrounded by racism. Southern stereotypes plague the beginning of the book. Some examples included are constant violence, double, triple, and quadruple contractions, vulgar language, and the over pronunciation of specific letters in certain words.
