Lulu Sawaf reading The Help

I am reading a novel called the help. It is a novel about the social and economic differences between colored and white people. There is an abundance of stereotypes surrounding one character; Hilly. All of the other characters seem stereotypical but actually have quite a lot of depth. Hilly is ignorant and believes only the worst about black people. She is petty, condescending, selfish, and has a large sense of false superiority. She is power hungry and fake. A stereotypical mean girl. Other than that, The Help has very dynamic characters. The Help is parallel to the rampant but less obvious racism that ravages America. I feel like Hilly is a very extreme but realistic embodiment of bigotry from the sixty's. A personification of the Jim Crow laws and racist America.

  1. Hey it’s Julia and I’m also reading The Help, I agree with everything you’ve said about Hilly. Personally, I’ve thought of her as the Female Reincarnation of Satan (I’m not exaggerating), especially after every she’s done to Minny, Miss Celia, and Miss Skeeter, the way she treats her own mother, the lengths she’ll go to to get her husband elected senator, and the lengths she’ll go to to keep her good reputation. She is shallow, sneaky, backstabbing, and cruel. “And she calls herself Christian.” (Quote from the Help, spoken by Miss Hypocritical Hilly herself)

  2. It's Ethan and I am reading the Astonishing life of Octavian Nothin and there is also a character in my book that is very mean. During the book a new donator helps the college and then in turn goes to see all of the projects that are being completed and then the ones he did not like he got rid of. He also forced Octavian to take a new Latin class that compared to his original class was very boring. This dude is a stereotypical boring and mean Teacher.

  3. I am reading Uncle Tom´s Cabin, and there is also a great divide between slaves and slave owners. There are many selfish, and heartless characters in my book. I believe out of all the characters, Simon Legree is the most ruthless one. He beats and kills many of his slaves. With this ruthlessness comes superstition. He is very superstitious that his mother and his past slaves that he has killed will haunt him. Uncle Tom´s Cabin is very intense at the beginning and the end of the book, but the middle is very calm and takes away the tension.

  4. I am reading Black Like me, and you can see how white and colored people treat each other. Whenever John's skin is dark, he is treated really poorly by white people and he has a lot of trouble in trying to communicate with them and finding jobs, but whenever his skin goes back to white, he gets treated with respect. This is when he realizes how much different colored people get treated.
